Tall Ships 2007

This year we had a special treat here in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Tall Ships Challenge made a stop at our beautiful Halifax Harbour. 28 Ships were in town from July 12- 16. The Tall Ships Challenge is known as one of the "largest international gathering of tall ships." The theme of this year's challenge was "Pirates." (due to the fact that Johnny Depp's movie, Pirates of the Caribbean 3 came out this year.)

There were ships from the U.S.A. visiting from Michigan, New York, Maine, Maryland, California, Virginia and Florida.
Ships also came from Ontario and of course, here in Nova Scotia.
We also had ships visiting from the Netherlands, Bermuda, India, and Germany.

Two very special Tall Ships included the Providence, which was in the second "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie, and the Bounty, which was in the second and third "Pirates" movies. The Bounty was taken down by the giant octopus in the third "Pirates" movie. Let me say, that is was an absolute treat to stand on the same ship that Johnny Depp stood on during the movie!!

There was even a special area for the kids... "Pirate's Landing" in Dartmouth had all kinds of kid-oriented things going on during the Tall Ships Festival. The girls had fun making pirate costumes and jumping in the bouncy castles. There were even treasure hunts and digging for Pirate booty. (pirate treasure).

Anyway, the ships were absolutely beautiful and with our boarding passes that we purchased, we were able to go onto quite a few of them. It was a lot of fun to board the ships and take a peek at how people live while out on the open sea.

The Tall Ships are due back in Halifax in 2009 and we will be looking forward to it. They are expecting even more ships next time... between 30 and 40 is what they are saying!
